Some common misconceptions in the world of dieting are about the idea that we need to eat only certain food groups to promote weight loss. In fact all this means that we deprive ourselves from many life-important nutrients, vitamins and minerals, which our body needs to function properly.

Strong, lean and fit body is everyone’s dream and most people have heard that this can be achieved by strict diets and exercising routines. But the truth is: healthy and well balanced eating plan and regular exercise, with small changes and improvements over time, is what you need to succeed. Here I will point and debunk few popular myths when it comes to dieting and losing weight.

Myth 1:

Only Certain Food Groups Are Allowed for Healthy Eating.

This can not be so much further from the truth. Many diets, especially crash diets will suggest cutting out given food groups or to stick to foods only from one food group. The human body is not designed to run on one kind of food, in order to be healthy we need a varied and balanced eating plan. Our body needs an everyday portion of fats, proteins, carbohydrates and some fibre, plenty of water, and fruits and vegetables as a source of vitamins and minerals. The so-called “unhealthy” foods – our body will require even some of those, if only in moderation, because nothing should be cut out completely. We should not forget also that grains, raw nuts and seeds play essential role for maintaining a strong immune system and fighting against illnesses, keeping us healthy.

Myth 2:

Meat Is the Best and Only Source of Proteins.

Not true. Another solid protein source are dairy products, keep in mind though they are high in fat too (so aim at low-fat milk, yogurt and cheese). Some fruits, vegetables, raw nuts, whole grain foods, legumes and oils are also rich in proteins.

In fact meat is high in fat and sodium. Red meats in particular, should be consumed in moderation, because if you overdo it, may cause issues with increasing cholesterol levels. And the quantity of protein it contains, is not as much as originally considered. While nuts, legumes, grains and oils – actually contain more. The suggested and necessary daily protein minimum is about 10 – 15% of the total calorie intake, or 50 – 60 grams of protein a day, so you realize, you don’t need to eat only meat to get your daily norm.

Myth 3:

Stay Away From Fat If You Want to Lose Weight.

Dietary fats can be classified mainly into two groups: saturated “bad” fats and unsaturated “good” fats. What is more the human body actually needs some fat to maintain the proper function of the internal organs; it also helps the muscles and joints to work smoothly. As a basic guide stay away from processed foods and oils (refined and hydrogenated). Aim to cold pressed, virgin and extra-virgin oils. Other good nutritious healthy fats sources are fish, avocados and raw nuts.

Myth 4:

The Less Calories You Consume the More Weight You Will Lose.

Cutting out on calories for too long can lead to deprivation of important nutrients, vitamins and minerals – in other words serious health problems. It is advisable for women on average not to consume fewer calories than 1,200 per day and for men not less than 1,800 calories.

If you are willing to lose weight, you need to build a natural healthy balanced eating plan. To achieve that you’ll need to start making smarter food choices. For example instead of snacking on rich in fat and sugar foods, you can literally eat plenty of fruits and as much vegetables as you want. By doing so you will not only satisfy your hunger but it will have beneficial effect on your shape and weight too.

The first steps to set you out on a successful weight loss routine, are to target a healthy weight you want to achieve, then make some general research on the recommended daily calorie allowance for that weight, and start making slow and gradual (no crush and burn) changes in terms of diet and fitness.

The Dukan diet has proved itself to be very successful for many people. In this article I will show you how you can increase its success if you use it in conjunction with Dukan diet forums.

As you probably know the first phase of the diet called the attack phase is the phase where you will eat just proteins for the first seven days.

This is often the phase where you will lose most weight. This has been one of the secrets of the success, because you will be encouraged to continue with the diet and lose even more weight.

Dukan Diet Forums

There are many forums that specialise in the Dukan diet. You can find a great number using Google.

One of the main benefits of joining one of these is that you will be able to ask questions that you have before you start the diet. You can also get a good idea of how
other people are coping with the diet and any setbacks that they have had.

You will also find plenty of encouragement. If you start a new diet on your own, you can feel lonely and a little apprehensive, but it is a great feeling that you have an online community that have probable faced all the fears that you may have and overcome them.

Dukan Recipes

Another wonderful bonus is that you will find lots of delicious recipes on these forums.

If you are struggling to find something different to eat and remain within the bounds of the diet, the recipes on these forums will give you plenty of tasty ideas.

This can be very handy when you are trying to plan the next weeks food for you diet.
You will also find out how much weight people have lost with different types of food without having to spend time and heartache by experimenting yourself.

You can also find out what sort of foods are easy to find in different countries and at what prices. Some foods are a lot cheaper in some countries and the forums will help to give you a good idea of what the best foods to look for in your own country.

Member’s Dukan Diaries

On some of the forums different members will keep a diary of their experiences on the diet and how much weight they have lost

This will give you a good idea of how much you could lose and how much effort is required.

I think that you can only benefit from at least looking at if not joining at least one Dukan diet forum. It will probably lead to you increasing the amount of weight that you lose and you will have the benefit of other member’s experience and help to fall back on whenever you hit a difficult patch.

Before you start a diet it is always advisable to consult a doctor or medical practitioner first to make sure that you are medically fit to do so.

Fasting, although often thought of as a detox, is very different from the simple detox diet plans we’ve gone through so far. A fast involves little or no actual nourishment for your body, and is much more intense in unleashing stored toxins.

Fasting can be done with juices or broths, or simply water. The best time for fasting is to transition to or from warm weather, like spring or autumn.

Phil and I did a one-day water fast once, with a day or two of green smoothies on either side. I love green smoothie cleanses, and I liked the water fast for most of the day. When it got to the end of the day though, I was totally tapped of energy and decided to have an apple. It was amazing how quickly I got energized from that apple!

By far the most popular fast is the Master Cleanse, which is a drink of lemon, cayenne, ginger and maple syrup several times during the day. I’ve known a lot of people who have done this cleanse, and they all struggle through it.

I’ve never tried it myself, but it does have some things going for it. Lemon, cayenne and ginger are all highly cleansing for the blood, and stimulate the digestive system to process whatever might be hanging around in your stomach or colon. One thing to note, though, is that lemonade from a can or a jar is not the stuff to use here. Fresh lemons, or pure lemon juice, is the only way to do this properly.

Some other ways to fast are drinking only herbal teas, drinking only a mineral-rich vegetable broth, or drinking just water. They go a step beyond a detox diet plan in that they have no fiber and barely any calories.

Although fasting can be very effective at pulling toxins from wherever it’s stored in your body, there are some good reasons not too fast. If done improperly, fasting can actually make you sick by releasing toxins, but not clearing them from the body.

When toxins are stored, they don’t cause any symptoms but if they’re released they will wreak havoc and need to be eliminated from the body quickly. There’s no fiber to push the toxins out of the colon during a fast, so many people opt for colon hydrotherapy to clean out the bowels.

Also, since the body is cleansing without a maintenance level of nutrients, you can deplete your body of essential nutrients if you fast for too long. As long as you’re aware of that and work to replenish your system after a fast, it’s not a problem. If it’s not taken into account in your fasting plan, it can cause long-term health problems.

Fasting in itself is not a solution for weight loss, since it’s too short-term. If carried on for too long, a lack of calories will actually stall your metabolism and prevent you from losing weight. A long-term weight loss diet plan strategy needs to incorporate a moderate diet with restricted – but not eliminated – caloric intake along with exercise.

Fasting can be part of the plan, and is great to use as a kick start or as a periodic cleanse, but starvation is not a long-term strategy for healthy weight loss.

Fasting is not an appropriate solution for people who are malnourished or have nutritional deficiencies. This can mean either people who are underweight, or people who are overweight but are under-nourished with a lack of nutrients.

Other situations where fasting is not recommended include:

* Pregnant or lactating
* Weak heart, arrhythmias
* Low blood pressure
* Low immunity
* Mental Illness
* Pre- and post-surgery
* Cold weather
* Cancer
* Chronic fatigue

Fasts definitely have benefits, and are appropriate in certain situations, but should only be done with supervision and with a proper plan. For those who just want to do a light cleanse on their own, a detox diet plan rather than a fast is a great choice.

There has been a huge rash of late of diets claiming that starchy carbohydrates such as rice, bread, pasta and potatoes are bad for you, that they are the cause of all things evil in our society, that obesity, diabetes and such can be traced to an over-consumption of such items. Instead, these diets say that we should cut out all such carbs from our diets, some even going so far as to say that we should subsist only on fat and protein, and remove carbs altogether. Is this a wise course of action? Would we be well served by doing such a thing?

First, let’s take a look at the role that carbs play in our diet and what our bodies use carbs for. When you eat carbs of any kind, they end up as glucose in your blood stream. This glucose is our primary source of fuel for much of our body, which depends on glucose to keep itself going. What glucose is needed is burned up, and then what remains is stored in our liver and muscle cells as glycogen. This glycogen can be called upon and turned into glucose should our glucose levels drop, but there is only so much as would sustain us for half a day.

Now, if you cut carbs from your diet, your body still needs glucose, and so it derives glucose from the protein in your muscles. This is why people become so skinny and wasted looking when they starve, because the proteins in their bodies are called in as a source of fuel. That is why traditionally people have considered carbs to be a source of ‘protein sparing’ nutrition, because when you eat carbs the glucose they result in spare your body from turning to your muscles for fuel.

However, when you have no carbs you generate no glucose and as a result your body not only turns to protein for fuel but also to fat, which is why cutting down carbs causes people to lose so much weight so quickly, as both fat and protein are used to fuel the body. Thus carbs not only are ‘protein sparing’, but they are also ‘fat sparing’, as they prevent your body from using fat as a source of fuel.

That is why it is so tricky to say whether or not a low carb diet is good for you. It isn’t simply a question of going low carb or not, but rather how you handle the other elements of your diet.

Creating a slow carb food list is a good idea for healthy dieters. Foods that have high carb contents promote weight gain. In fact, these foods could not just increase your weight, but they can also cause various body disorders. This is the reason why excessive carbohydrate intake should be avoided. Remember that any excess is bad.

The difficult thing in avoiding carb foods is the temptation of eating it. Most high carb foods have high sugar contents, hence they are sweets. These sweet foods are hard to resist because of their magnificent tastes. Many people are sweet lovers, these kind of foods can make them happy. Sweets such as chocolates and cakes have certain components that can lighten up anyone’s mood. In fact, a lot of people who have depressed moods will crave for sweets in order to lighten up their moods.

Developing self-discipline when it comes to taking up carb foods is advisable. In order to stay healthy and to prevent excessive weight gain you should post limit to yourself when it comes to taking carb foods. In order to control yourself in ingesting carbs, make a slow carb diet food list. This list is a good diet plan, which comprises of list of foods, meal time, and the amount of meal that should be preferably taken every meal time.

Before creating a slow carb diet food list, learn foods that components of foods that you know. Make sure to choose those foods that have low carbohydrate contents but rich in fiber. Know the proper amount of these foods that should be taken. It is good to assess your needs as well, because you are the only person who will be able to know what your body needs. You can also base the amount of foods on your Body Mass Index. If you have normal Body Mass Index, maintain it, but if you are below or above the normal level, make a goal to attain the appropriate BMI for your age.

Considering your vulnerability to different kinds of illnesses is right in creating food list. You can plan effectively the foods that you should include on your diet list when you are already aware on the functionality of your body towards diseases, or how your body will react in such kind of stimulus. You can access your own vulnerability to diseases. If you have many relative who suffered from cardiac diseases, this would mean that you should work as early as now to prevent having these diseases. One of the nicest ways to get rid of these diseases is to have your own slow carb diet food list.

An important thing to take into consideration when trying to lower the amount of sodium is to not get frustrated during the learning process. Learning all the things that have high amounts of sodium will give you a head start.

It is always a surprise to a beginner when they find out how much sodium they have been putting in their bodies. There is no need to have excessive amounts of sodium in our diets and being aware is the first step to changing it.

The labels on packaged food tell you how much sodium is in each item. You will want to get into a habit of looking at these labels so you can choose the best ones. Little sodium is necessary for functionality but excess becomes waste.

If you were to limit your sodium intake you may be able to prevent several health hazards. Sodium causes bloading and can be reduced with large amounts of water. Cleaning out your system with water and cutting down on sodium will be of benefit.

Writing down what you eat and how much sodium it contains will help with your awareness. This would be considered a sodium journal and will help. Rember to always read labels and chart the amount of daily sodium intake.

We want to decrease our sodium levels and then our blood pressure will follow. High blood pressure is a huge concern for our country and needs medical attention if sever. Lets avoid these drastic measures by taking precautions now and cut down on sodium.

Heart attacks are what follows a high amount of sodium intake. Blood flow is the main cause of heart failure due to sodium crystals forming in the vein and blocking blood flow. If we have good blood flow then we will sleep better, digest food better, and not go through reactions caused by high blood pressure.

If you are one that likes to put salt on everything even before tasting then you are guilty of consuming way too much sodium. Adding salt to any food is giving more sodium than needed. Our foods are already processed with sodium and adding to it will only hurt your body.

There are not a lot of people that understand how addictive salt is. When you are used to eating salty foods it can be very physically and mentally difficult to receive the same satisfaction from foods that you eat that do not have salt in them.

It is very important to continue to be away of our sodium intake and a journal is a great way to do this. If you feel tired or low on energy it is probably due to over load of sodium and our diet needs to be re-evaluated.

Remember these few things and you should be on your way to feeling more vibrant than before. Even a small change like lowering your sodium intake will give you all the boost in daily life that you are lacking today. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water so it flushes out the sodium we do intake.

The race to fitness is on and many folks are hopping onto the band wagon. Some people aim to lose weight in order to get a sexy, toned and sculpted figure; others do it because they’re embarrassed with the present state of their body and want to get into shape, while the rest do it to continue staying strong and healthy.

Therefore, you are likely to come across numerous weight loss programs out there that are designed to help you achieve your health and fitness goals. And here’s the best part: You need not shell out money for an expensive gym membership; instead, you could simply pick up some highly recommended diet books and follow the plans included in them – you’ll soon be on your way to a slim and fit figure.

That said, there’s such a huge range of programs out there, you might be confused as to which one would be the best for you to try out. To help you make up your mind, have a look at the following summaries of the 6 most popular diet plans currently available on the market:-

Atkins’ New Diet Revolution by Dr. Atkins

This weight loss program encourages a diet rich in protein, with less focus on carbs. You can consume plenty of meat and vegetables, but limit your intake of pasta and bread.

Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet by Dr. Heller

This particular diet program advocates low carbohydrate eating. It also suggests consuming meats, fruits, vegetables, grain and dairy products. However, Dr. Heller warns against taking in too much carb.

Choose to Lose by Dr. Goor

Cautions against intake of fatty foods. You are asked to maintain a “fat” budget and then given helpful instructions on how to spend it. This weight loss system does not pressure the individual to watch his carb intake. Consuming low-fat dairy products as well as meat and seafood is recommended. You are also advised to constantly fill your diet with fresh fruits and vegetables,cereals and pasta. Furthermore, Dr. Goor advocates keeping an eye on your triglyceride levels; if high, cut down on the carbs and consume more of the unsaturated fats.

The Pritkin Principle

Recommends a diet rich in watery foods that make you feel full. Also gives the green light to heartily indulge in oatmeal,soups, pasta, salads, low-fat dairy and fruits and vegetables. On the other hand, the Pritkin Principle limits protein sources to seafood, poultry and lean meat. A downside to this fat-burning plan is that it places emphasis on low amounts of saturated fats and calcium and also limits the intake of protein.

Volumetrics

The ideal program for low-density calorie eating. Recommends the same foods as the Pritkin Principle, but strictly restricts fatty/dry foods such as pretzels, crackers and popcorn. This plan is a reasonably good one to follow given the fact it recommends generous quantities of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as restricting the consumption of saturated fats.

Finally, let’s take a quick look at…

The Zone

Suggest that you go moderately low on carbs and moderately high on proteins. Encourages low-fat protein foods such as fish, lean chicken, grains, nutritional veggies and fruits. On the downside, this weight loss plan fails to add calcium to the diet. Well, there you have it – a summary of 6 of the most popular weight loss diet programs available today!

With most diet plans you start on there is a strict routine that you must adhere to but that’s not the way the Every Other Day Diet Plan works. When you are on the Every Other Day Diet you are expected to follow the plan very closely one day and then the next day you can eat some of your most loved foods and maybe even some of the stuff you crave.

Jon Benson who formulated the plan states that getting fat is usually not your fault but it certainly is your responsibility to do something about it. He has put together a plan that will give you all the information to get that weight under control and keep it right where you want it to be.

With the plan you are going to learn:

* What are the real culprits in your weight gain process.
* How to straighten up your relationship with food.
* How to implement a sound program for weight control that is easy to manage.

You have to understand that your body is able to easily make adjustments to the changes in your routine. When you get used to eating a lot of food that may not be very healthy for you, your body just puts it aside and stores it up in case you don’t get enough of that stuff a little later. You have to fool your body into thinking that it is getting a variety of foods in a variety of quantities so it won’t try to store everything up. Your metabolism will not slow down as it can in those diets where you cut back in energy creating foods. When you keep your metabolism percolating right along you will lose weight and you will feel good while you do it.

With the EODD you will be given several plans to choose from according to what your size is and how much you would like to lose. You’ll be shown how to cycle your calories so that on one day you will be eating meals that are going to help you to lose weight and on the other days you’ll be able to eat some of the foods you really like. You have to be careful not to get carried away and that will depend a lot on how much you really want to lose the weight.

If you think that being able to eat as you would like to on every other day will make it a lot easier to stay with a diet plan then you should take a close look at this idea of calorie cycling. This method may sound a little unusual but it is working for a lot of people and it is much easier than trying to stop eating for days at a time.
